SD card

The SD card is probably the most important accessory for your camera. Burrel trail cameras do not have an internal memory, so the right type of SD card is required. In this article you can find, for example, detailed SD card recommendations for your Burrel camera.

General information about SD cards

SD cards are small electronic devices that can be broken when new or break after a certain period of use, just like other electronic devices. Although SD card may look perfect outside, it can potentially be damaged internally.

There are many different types, sizes and purposes of SD cards. Choosing the right SD card for your trail camera can be tricky and complicated. If the SD card do not meet the camera requirements, it causes a variety of problems, such as the camera cannot read the SD card, the camera does not take/send pictures and videos, prevents the camera from completing a firmware update, prevent the camera from updating and updating settings and cause commands to stack up. Therefore, a functional and compatible SD card is critical for the camera.

Formatting is very important to the process of the SD card properly communicating with your trail camera. If an SD card has been used previously in other devices or trail cameras, it is possible that traces of those devices formatting are left on the SD card, which can cause issues. We recommend formatting the SD card each time it is inserted to the trail camera. Our recommendation also applies to new SD cards. More information on formatting the SD card directly from the camera can be found later in this article.

Information found on the SD card

The markings found on the SD card vary depending on the manufacturer and brand. However, below we will tell you what information you can find on the SD card, and that it means so that you can find the right SD card for your trail camera. If you want to learn more about SD cards, you can find detailed information on the internet using search engines.

1. Size/capacity

2. Card type

3. UHS Class

4. Video Speed Class

5. Speed Class

6. UHS Speed Class

1. Size/capacity

This tells you how many pictures and/or videos can fit on the SD card. For Burrel trail cameras, the size of the SD card must not exceed 32 GB.

2. Card type

There are different types of SD cards. Different card types use different file formats, so not all memory cards are suitable for all cameras. Trail cameras must use an SD or SDHC memory card.

3. UHS Class

The UHS Class determines the reading speed of the SD card. The reading speed of trail camera's SD card must not exceed UHS-1, in other words the marking on the SD card is either in format UHS-1 or I. If the above-mentioned markings cannot be found on the SD card, then the memory card should contain the marking mentioned in section 5, in other words the number 6 or 10 inside the circle.

4. Video Speed Class

This speed class designation is usually found on SD cards intended for recording videos. SD cards for trail cameras may still have this. If the SD card shows V6 or V10, it indicates that the Video Speed Class of that SD card is compatible with the trail camera. On some memory cards, the marking is replaced by the Speed Class marking mentioned in section 5, in other words either the number 6 or 10 must be found inside the circle.

5. Speed Class

The "traditional" SD card speed rating, which indicates the writing speed. When a 6 or 10 is found inside a circle on the SD card, it indicates that the SD card is suitable for Burrel trail cameras. If the SD card has a slower speed (4 inside the circle), it may work with some older Burrel cameras, but we do not recommend buying that type of SD card for any trail camera.

If this traditional speed rating marking is not found on the SD card, the SD card should have the UHS Speed Class marking mentioned in section 6.

6. UHS Speed Class

The letter "U" and the number inside it indicate which UHS Speed Class the SD card represents. This entry indicates the minimum writing speed of the card. For SD cards used in Burrel trail cameras, the UHS rating may not exceed 1, in other words the marking on the memory card is either UHS-1 or, alternatively, Speed Class 6 or 10 as mentioned in section 5.

Help & Tips

  • The camera power switch should be set to the OFF position when installing or removing a SD card from the camera.
  • When installing an SD/SDHC memory card, check that the slider on the left side of the SD card is in the upper position. If the SD card is locked, the camera will not work.
  • Format the SD card each time it is installed in the camera. Formatting is done directly from the camera as follows: Menu -> System submenu -> Format. Please note that formatting will erase the memory card completely and no information about the SD card will be recorded, etc. can be restored.
  • If the SD card is full, the camera will not work. The easiest way to erase an SD card is to reformat. This action can also be performed remotely by SMS Control, if this function is enabled. You can find here more information about SMS Control.
  • To ensure that the camera works even when the SD card is full, we recommend turning on overwriting in the camera settings (Menu -> System submenu -> Overwrite). When overwrite is on, the camera automatically starts saving new files on top of old ones as the SD card fills up.
  • In most cases, problems related with SD cards, are helped either by formatting the SD card or by a completely new SD card from another manufacturer. Therefore, we recommend that you format the camera's current SD card and try another recommended SD card before contacting our technical support. If necessary, you can create a support request here.
