How to update firmware

On this website, you can find the update files for all Burrel cameras. At the bottom of the page, you will also find instructions on how to update your camera. Please note that the camera update is done directly on the camera using a memory card.

Keep Your Camera Updated

We recommend that you always have the latest firmware version (FW version) installed on your camera. To check your current FW version, follow these steps:

  1. Open the camera settings using the Menu button.
  2. Go to the System submenu.
  3. Scroll down and select "Information".

Find the Right Update File

In the table below, you will find all update files sorted by camera model.

Note! If you are unsure which file to use, contact our support team! You can do it here.

Important Information About SMS PRO and SMS III

There are different versions of SMS PRO and SMS III. Check your camera's version in the settings before downloading any file. Ensure that your camera's HW version matches the HW version listed in the table below.

Specific for SMS PRO

If your SMS PRO camera was manufactured before September 2021 and does not have a factory-installed Burrel ID, you should:

  • Select the update file for model S387E (without Burrel+) under the section "Other Burrel Cameras".

Note! Updating the camera with an FW version that includes Burrel+ will not enable the Burrel+ function but may cause malfunctions!

Use the Burrel App

You can use the Burrel application with any camera that sends pictures via email. The camera model does not matter. Instructions on how to add cameras to the Burrel application can be found here.

Important Before Updating

Before you start the update, make sure of the following:

  1. The camera password, which protects the camera settings from unauthorized access, must be disabled.
  2. CameraTracker (only in S22WA camera) must be turned off.

Both settings can be found in the camera settings under System submenu. Make sure the change is saved to the camera.

Note! If these features are enabled during the update:

  • The security code will no longer work.
  • You will not be able to access the camera settings.
  • The camera must be sent for servicing – and this is not covered by the warranty.

How to update your camera:

  1. Download the correct update file for your camera from the table above.
  2. Select the instructions that match your file type. Example, if the extracted update file is in .OTA format, follow the instructions for newer cameras (.OTA file).
  3. If you are unsure what file to use, contact our support! The wrong file can permanently damage your camera.

Extracting .zip Files

Windows and Mac computers have a built-in function for extracting .zip files.

  • If you have trouble extracting the file, contact our support team. You can do it here.
  • We can send you the uncompressed file via email.

Note! Remember to provide: Camera model and HW version.

Update instructions for newer camera (.OTA-file)
1. Turn the camera power switch to OFF mode. Connect the camera to the computer using a USB cable (S22WA: Micro-USB, other cameras: Mini-USB). Alternatively remove the SD card from the camera and insert it into the computer or a memory card reader. Note that the E24 camera does not have a USB port.
2. Once the computer recognizes the device, transfer the .OTA file to the root/main folder of the camera's SD card. In the image below, you can see how the update file is transferred from the computer's desktop to the SD card, but the transfer can also be done from, for example, downloaded files. Please note that the update files have different names, do not let this confuse you. Note also that the file cannot be opened on a computer, only the camera can read it.

3. After transferring the file, disconnect the USB cable from the camera or insert the SD card back into the camera.
4. Turn on the camera power switch to SETUP mode (S22WA camera to ON mode).
5. Once the camera has started, press the Menu button to enter the settings, then use the right arrow to navigate to the System submenu (gear icon). Scroll down to find "FW Update". Press OK and press OK again to confirm the update.
6. The camera will now update the new firmware. The update process may take several minutes. After the update, the camera will restart automatically.

Note! If an error occurs, format the camera's SD card from the camera settings (Menu -> System submenu -> Format), which will completely erase the SD card. If necessary, try updating again using a new SD card that meets the recommended specifications. SD card recommendations can be found here.
7. When the update is complete, you must restore the default settings to apply the new transmission settings. Open settings with the Menu button and navigate to the System submenu. Find "Default settings" and press OK. The reset process takes a few seconds.

Note! If default settings is not performed after the update, old settings will remain in the camera, causing it to malfunction.

8. After restoring the default settings, check the camera settings and adjust them according to your preferences. Make sure to enter your contact details in the Sending submenu under "Phone and "Email". Also, check the "SendTo" setting. Settings must be configured directly on the camera.

Note! In Burrel+ cameras you must upload the camera settings to the server, otherwise the camera will lose them after rebooting. To upload camera settings, press "Menu", then go to the "Wireless" page, press the down arrow and select "Upload settings", press the OK button.
9. The camera is now ready for use. Make sure the camera sends pictures before using the camera on site. You can test the camera sending function by taking a manual test picture. Instructions can be found here.

Update instructions for older cameras (.BIN-file)
1. Turn the camera power switch to OFF mode. Connect the camera to the computer using a Mini USB cable. Alternatively remove the SD card from the camera and insert it into the computer or a memory card reader.
2. Once the computer recognizes the device, transfer the .BIN file to the root/main folder of the camera's SD card. In the image below, you can see how the update file is transferred from the computer's downloaded files, but the transfer can also be done from, for example computer's desktop. Note that the file cannot be opened on a computer, only the camera can read it.

3. After transferring the file, disconnect the USB cable from the camera or insert the SD card back into the camera.
4. Turn off the camera if it is on.
5. Hold down the PLAY button (the triangle between the Menu and Delete buttons) and turn the power switch to the SETUP position.
6. Keep holding the PLAY button until the camera starts normally. The software update is now complete. The update process may take several minutes.

Note! If an error occurs, format the camera's SD card via the camera settings (SETUP -> Menu -> System submenu -> Format), which will completely erase the SD card. If necessary, try updating again using a new SD card that meets the recommended specifications. SD card recommendations can be found here.
7. When the update is complete, restore the default settings to apply the new transmission settings.

9. The camera is now ready for use. Make sure the camera sends pictures before using the camera on site. You can test the camera sending function by taking a manual test picture. Instructions can be found here.
